Sorceress

Can you guess where I used AI?
The answer is: the backdrop! :)

One really handy feature of Daz is being able add 2D images to Plane primitives and use them as backdrops for portrait renders. You can even turn them into their own light source to avoid uneven lighting caused by Daz lights.

For this project, I typed, "dimly lit gothic foyer" into my AI app. After just a few clicks, it produced one I liked well enough to use. Then, I loaded Daz, posed and lit my character with a classic 3-point lighting setup. My back light is above and behind her head, simulating the sunlight from the window in the backdrop. I added two additional lights behind her shoulders to create motivated light from the sconces and further separate her from the backdrop.

I created Sorceress, and Heated Negotiation, to demonstrate that AI can be used judiciously in ways that don't detract from the work you put into creating your 3D art. The decision to use AI does not and should not automatically mean "enhancing" figures and objects - or whole scenes for that matter - to make them appear more lifelike. Nor should 3D artists or their work be considered any less creative or having less artistic value for using AI as a form of postwork.

As I move forward with my own work, I've re-committed myself to minimizing my use of AI, and only resorting to it when necessary. I needed the flame in Heated Negotiation, and I needed the backdrop in Sorceress. Beyond situations like those, I won't be enhancing my 3D art with AI anymore. Nor will I be posting anymore AI-generated art. I miss the look of 3D (surprised myself with that realization), I miss the challenge of setting up scenes, and I miss getting feedback on what I did, not what I managed to wrangle from AI. If I can't expressed myself with Daz or other 3D apps, I won't express myself at all.

I find using AI for Backdrops in DAZ can really be a time saver, since you can fairly easily generate exactly the backdrop you want, and don't have to search through your runtime for an appropriate environment then have to load the whole damned thing just to get a background.
