There is a storm coming though this weekend that is likely to disrupt power across wide areas. The site may go down, it's more likely I'll be off line due to power outages. In any case, we should be back to normal when the storm is over.

NOOOOOOOOOO Yeah, everyone here in TX is freaking out. Luckily I am on vacation, so i don't have to go to work in this (I know all my employees are going to call in sick). Hopefully my power doesn't go out since I don't want to freeze to death.

Texas? Honestly you are unlikely to freeze to death in that state. I know you have had the odd unusual patch of snow and ice, but it is very, very unusual to happen that far South. if it does, it's down to global warming screwing up traditional weather patterns.
Erm, you don't know how cold the plain areas get in the US and Texas is a mighty big state. It does freeze in the northern areas. And it's going to again this weekend. I hope they managed to fix the grid, I'm not holding my breath.

The grid is fine, it's the local power companies that worry me. During the last big freeze that went on for almost a week, I lost power and had to go sleep at work for 2 days, not fun. That isn't really an option this time since I am on vacation and I know how chaotic it will be (panic buying)
I am in Dallas and we get ice probably 20 or so times every winter and snow maybe three or four times, but in the panhandle (Lubbock, Amarillo) it always snows and gets much colder.
The problem is people here are not used to it and freak out, especially drivers. We have crazy drivers already, add in slick roads, and it's insane.
I can't imagine living farther north and dealing with 10 feet of snow. I could get used to it since I like winter and snow, but not if I have to go to work in it.
I always thought retiring to a dream cabin in Alaska would be great, but then I would have to deal with grizzlies, wolves and bigfoot in addition to being snowed in.
The thought of going to bed and losing poser as it goes down to 0 F scares the crap out of me (you can freeze to death under 32 F).

So, you survived? I saw some funny pics how people were prepping for the cold weekend like it was an upcoming apocalypse.
It was a bit anticlimactic here although other areas really got slammed. Roads were unusable for a day, completely iced over. 95% of it melted the next day. Never did lose power. About 200 miles north of us it took until today to get back to normal.

That's every food retailer, i am a manager for a national chain and whenever bad weather is coming, customers act like it's the end of the world. Luckily I was on vacation so I didn't have to deal with it, but man went back to my store today and it is tore up, LOL

It was pretty bad for here, especially farther north, didn't lose power though. The roads were terrible getting out of my subdivision, but great on the toll way and when i got the area my work is in, full of ice and snow. Oh well, we get one round of winter like this a year in TX, so who's ready for spring? LOL

We've just had Storm Chandra pass through, the third big blow in the last two weeks. This one brought more heavy rain than anything else, which caused a lot of rivers to burst their banks.

My family and 28,000+ others were without power starting almost a full week ago. We just got ours back on. We had a once every quarter century freak ice storm that took down a shitload of trees knocking out power lines all across the region. Add to that, it was like 10-20 degrees every night, and we could see our breath all day inside the house. Craziness. We each slept with like 5 blankets and even our 3 cats and our dog had to maneuver under the sheets with us.
Jesus. I'm never complaining about small inconveniences again, that's for fucking sure.

In my experience dogs cerainly and maybe cats do make great hot-water-bottles...

The water seemed fine, but did stop coming out at one point due to a power outage at the well pump. But now WE have to pay more $$ since we had the water running to keep it from freezing.
